Keith and I have two enduring love affairs: ours, and New York. For our first wedding anniversary—on Valentine’s Day—we celebrated both at The Plaza. Marrying on February 14 does give a husband an unusually clear calendar reminder. I prefer to think of it as thoughtful planning.
There’s a particular kind of romance at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South. Outside, Manhattan is doing what Manhattan does; inside, gilded mirrors, marble, and chandeliers make even getting ready feel like a scene. The Plaza understands an entrance. It also understands the importance of an excellent mirror.
The Rainbow Room was always my dream for those skyline views, and The Plaza was where Keith and I wanted so many of our wedding photographs. Between the two, our wedding imagination had a very firm Manhattan address. Coming back for our anniversary felt like another chapter in the same love letter.
The fashion in these photographs has its own conversation with the setting. Delicate embroidery and sheer panels give the bodice definition; a soft tulle skirt supplies the movement. The shorter silhouette has a little of the ballet costume about it, which will always appeal to me. In the blush look, one oversized shoulder rose does the work of several accessories. Different shapes, the same romantic instinct.
Then there are the crystal butterfly heels. Their winged detail brings a little fantasy to the ankle, while the slim straps keep the shape delicate. Paired with the rose detail at my wrist, they carry the romance right down to the finishing touches. Sensible shoes can have another weekend; these had a celebration to attend.
For all the beautiful details, the part I hold closest is being there with Keith. We both love New York: the energy, the skyline, and the feeling that there is always another evening waiting to happen. Our anniversary gave us another memory in a city that holds so much of our story. Here’s to him, to us, and to many more New York chapters.
